2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, and death. Excessive amounts of magnesium may cause central nervous system depression, respiratory paralysis, and cardiac arrest.

Eye

May cause moderate eye irritation.

Skin

May cause moderate skin irritation.

Inhaled

Dust is irritating to the respiratory tract. May cause methemoplobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, tachycardia, dyspnea, and death. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Repeated exposures may case kidney damage and digestive tract abnormalities.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Get medical aid immediately.

Eye

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Get medical aid.

Skin

Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes, while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists.

Inhaled

Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower and available for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically based on individual reactions of patient and judgement of doctor. The use of calcium disodium EDTA as a chelating agent should be determined by qualified medical personnel.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral (rat) LD50: 5440 mg/kg. Not listed as a carcinogen by ACGIH, IARC, NIOSH, NTP, or OSHA.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

None established.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure adequate ventilation to keep airbourne concentrations low.

3.3 Personal Protection

No respiratory protection is required where adequate ventilation exists. If airborne concentration is high, use an appropriate respirator or dust mask. Safety glasses with sideshields, overalls and gloves are recommended. Ensure a safety shower and eye bath are available and ready for use.

3.4 Flammability

Decomposes.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Keep away from oxidizing materials and reducing agents. Keep in a dry, cool and well ventilated place out of direct sunlight. Keep containers closed when not in use. Avoid heat. Do not store on wooden floors.

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

UN No. 1474

Class 5.1

Hazard IRRITANT OXIDIZING

Risk Phrases

R36/37/38 Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.

R8 Contact with combustible material may cause fire.

Safety Phrases

S15 Keep away from heat.

S7 Keep container tightly closed.

S17 Keep away from combustible material.

S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

S36 Wear suitable protective clothing.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean up personnel should wear full protective clothing, including respiratory protection.

With a clean shovel, carefully place material into clean, dry containers and cover. Remove from the spill area. Flush spill area with plenty of water.

Disposal

Dispose according to all local, state and federal regulations.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Practically all nitrates are powerful oxidizing agents. Move containers from fire area if it can be done without risk. Use water to keep fire exposed containers cool. Avoid contact with organic matter and oxidizable materials. The material is insensitive to impact, but may explode when exposed to excessive heat or flame or by chemical reaction with oxidizable material. Closed containers exposed to heat may explode. Products of decomposition may include nitrogen oxides, and oxides of magnesium.

Extinguishing Media

Firefighters should wear full protective clothing including self contained breathing apparatus. Use water as extinguishing media, do not use carbon dioxide or dry chemical media.
